New fish-based index simplifies water quality monitoring for pampean streams.
Freshwater fish are good indicators of environmental health. A new Index of Biotic Integrity (IBIA) was created for the Del Azul stream in Argentina, based on fish populations. The IBIA showed similar results to traditional water quality tests, but is cheaper and easier to use. The upper basin had good conditions, the urban area had poor conditions, and downstream areas were recovering. The IBIA is a promising alternative for monitoring stream health.
