Some forest fires in northern forests can smoulder through the winter and flare up in the spring. Hot summers and deep burning into organic soils make this more likely. Between 2002 and 2018, these "overwintering" fires accounted for 0.8% of burned areas, but in one year, it was as high as 38%. Detecting these fires early could help reduce carbon emissions and firefighting costs.
