Overgrazing and crop expansion threaten forage species diversity in Ethiopia.
Rangelands in Ethiopian highlands are at risk due to crop cultivation and overgrazing. A study in Tikur Incinni District found 58 forage species, with Poaceae and Asteraceae families being most diverse. Privately owned rangelands had more species than communal ones, likely due to overgrazing and crop expansion. Farmers blame population growth and farmland expansion for rangeland degradation. Enclosing areas for sustainable management is recommended for restoring ecosystems and conserving biodiversity.
