Decrease in panicle number threatens hybrid rice yield sustainability.
The researchers studied how indica hybrid rice has changed over 30 years of genetic improvement. They compared 23 rice combinations grown in the same field and found that as panicle number decreased, grain yield also decreased. Despite some traits like plant height and grain weight increasing slightly, the overall yield per plant decreased. They also discovered that biomass per plant was the key factor affecting yield, emphasizing the importance of tillering ability in rice breeding for high yields.
