Cover crops and no-tillage boost potato yield and soil health.
The study looked at how different ways of preparing soil and using cover crops affect the soil and potato yield. They tested three tillage methods (conventional, minimum, and no-tillage) and three cover crops (vetch, barley, and none). Barley cover crop added more dry matter to the soil than vetch. No-tillage with vetch had the most soil organic matter. No-tillage and minimum tillage had the highest soil moisture levels. Conventional tillage had the most stems per plant and plant height. Vetch cover crop increased stems per plant, plant height, and leaf area index. Conventional tillage had the most tubers per square meter, and planting cover crops increased tuber numbers.
