Coal hydrogenation study reveals potential for cleaner energy production.
The study looked at different types of coal to see how they change when exposed to hydrogenation. They found that high vitrinite coal mostly converted into other substances, leaving only a small amount of partially dissolved vitrinite. On the other hand, high inertinite coal had about half of its inertinite converted, along with most of its vitrinite and exinite. The researchers also discovered that inertinite with a reflectance of less than 1.4% was converted under the hydrogenation conditions used.
