Groundwater Irrigation Saves Farmland from Ecological Disaster in Central Asia
The article discusses using groundwater from vertical drainage wells for irrigation in Uzbekistan to address water scarcity and land pollution issues. Field experiments were conducted to determine how much land can be irrigated from one well, considering factors like irrigation time and water quality. The study found that using underground pumped water for irrigation can help save water and improve land reclamation. The water-salt balance analysis showed that water supply from canals and precipitation are crucial, with evapotranspiration and drainage flow being significant factors. Overall, there is a small salt carryover annually, indicating a negative balance on the land.
