Global initiative launched to save fisheries and fishers from collapse.
Global fisheries are in critical condition due to overfishing, with fish being taken out of the sea faster than they can replenish. The World Bank Group is working to improve fisheries worldwide by focusing on sustainable practices and good governance. Efforts include coastal management, inland fisheries, and aquaculture in developing countries. A new Global Program for Sustainable Fisheries (PROFISH) will promote effective strategies to prevent overfishing and ecological degradation. The World Bank Group is collaborating with the Global Environment Facility on regional initiatives to support sustainable fisheries.
