Mixotrophic nanoflagellates key to stabilizing Eastern Mediterranean microbial food web.
Mixotrophic nanoflagellates play a crucial role in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea's food web by consuming bacteria and transferring essential nutrients like phosphorus. When phosphorus is scarce, these nanoflagellates support bacterial growth by providing them with carbon, creating a balanced ecosystem. However, when phosphorus levels increase, other nanoflagellates become more important in controlling bacterial populations. This study shows that mixotrophic nanoflagellates are key players in nutrient transfer in this marine environment, highlighting their importance for the ecosystem's functioning.
