Glacier meltwater reveals changing chemical mix, impacting local environments.
The researchers studied the chemical composition of meltwater from two glaciers in West Greenland to understand how different types of water mix beneath and within the glaciers. By measuring electrical conductivity, they could see the concentration of dissolved solids in the meltwater. The study was done at Qamanârssup sermia in 1981 and at Kitdlerssuaq in 1982 and 1983. The results showed that the meltwater from the glaciers had different chemical characteristics depending on where it came from and how it flowed through the ice.
