The article explores how Indonesian EFL learners negotiate meaning in casual conversations. The researchers analyzed conversations of graduate students and found that they mainly exchanged information through statements. The students often showed off their knowledge and sometimes focused on intimacy in their conversations. The students were successful in taking on different roles as speakers, either initiating or responding to keep the conversation going.
