Deadly respiratory outbreaks in healthcare settings demand targeted management strategies.
Respiratory outbreaks in healthcare settings in Ontario were studied from 2007 to 2017. Influenza caused most outbreaks, but non-influenza outbreaks had higher attack rates and longer durations. Human metapneumovirus had high case fatality rates. Different pathogens had varying impact on outbreak severity, suggesting tailored management strategies could help reduce the burden of respiratory outbreaks.
