Chinese cities evolving into polycentric hubs, reshaping urban landscapes nationwide.
Chinese cities are changing with more decentralized planning. By analyzing 294 cities, it was found that most cities have at least one natural city due to rapid urban growth. While many cities still have one main center, 110 cities show signs of having multiple centers in their metropolitan areas. Central cities remain important, but some have a polycentric structure. Overall, metropolitan areas tend to be more polycentric than central cities. Only 36 cities have polycentric structures in both their metropolitan areas and central cities, mostly in eastern China.
