Lowland rice farmers in Nigeria ready to embrace climate-smart agriculture!
Climate change is a big problem for farming in Africa. To help, researchers studied what rice farmers in Nigeria prefer when it comes to climate-friendly farming practices. They found that farmers like rice varieties that mature early or medium, and prefer intermittently flooding their fields instead of continuously flooding them. Farmers also prefer exporting straw to feeding livestock over incorporating straw into the soil. Overall, farmers are willing to switch to these climate-smart practices if they get incentives from the government and other groups.
