New high-yielding wheat variety "Balcha" revolutionizes Ethiopian wheat production.
The researchers tested different wheat types in Ethiopia to find the best ones for high yield and adaptability. They grew 15 wheat genotypes in eight locations over two years. They found that the genotype ETBW8260 (G4) had the highest grain yield and performed well in different environments. This genotype was resistant to yellow rust and suitable for low to midland wheat-growing areas. After further testing, ETBW8260 (G4) was released as a commercial variety named "Balcha" in 2019, recommended for the country's wheat production areas.
