During the late Qing dynasty, Western missionaries and foreign businessmen introduced new ways of publishing and distributing science books in China. This led to the rise of private bookstores and the adoption of Western typography over traditional woodblock printing. As a result, the old academic research methods declined, giving way to new approaches in the industry.
