Farmers Boost Tomato Yields and Water Efficiency with Mulch and Alternate Irrigation
In a tomato study, researchers tested different ways of watering and using mulch to help plants grow better with less water. They found that using traditional furrow watering instead of alternate furrow watering led to higher tomato yields. Also, covering the soil with mulch made from soybean or wheat straw gave higher yields than using maize straw or leaving soil bare. The best results were seen with traditional furrow watering combined with soybean or wheat straw mulch, which increased tomato production and used water more efficiently. This shows that a simple change in how we water and protect plants with mulch can help tomatoes grow better with less water.
