Local calibration of crop coefficients revolutionizes efficient irrigation water management.
The study aimed to figure out how much water onion plants need at different growth stages in Werer, Ethiopia. Researchers used special tools to measure water use and local weather data to calculate water needs. They found that onion plants need different amounts of water at different stages of growth, with higher water needs during the middle of the season. The amount of water needed for onion plants in the main season was different from the cool season. This means that farmers need to adjust how much water they give their onion crops based on the stage of growth and the season.
