Climate change driving increased runoff in major Chinese river tributaries.
The study looked at how climate changes affect the amount of water flowing in the Tarim River basin in China. By using a special model and data on temperature and rainfall, the researchers found that rising temperatures caused more water to flow in the Hotan and Aksu Rivers, while increased rainfall led to more water in the Yarkant River. This goes against the common belief that glacier-covered areas are mainly affected by temperature changes. The amount of temperature and rainfall changes in each area is important for understanding how much water will flow in the rivers.
