Biochar boosts maize yield by 76% and water productivity by 58%
Biochar can help plants access water during dry periods. In this study, maize plants were grown in soil with and without biochar, then subjected to cycles of drying and watering. Plants in biochar-amended soil had higher transpiration and photosynthesis rates during dry periods, leading to a 76% increase in grain yield. Biochar also improved soil water flow and root access to water, helping plants thrive under drought conditions.
