Improved climate models predict more accurate rainfall patterns, aiding disaster preparedness.
The study looked at how well different computer models represent daily rainfall patterns. They compared models from two different projects and found that the newer models are better at showing when and how much it rains over land. However, there is still uncertainty in how well they do over oceans. The models were split into two groups based on how well they captured differences in rainfall near coasts. One group did a good job of showing nighttime rain over islands and coasts, especially in the Maritime Continent. The researchers think that the models have gotten better at showing daily rainfall patterns overall, but more work is needed to improve how they represent rain near islands and coasts.
