Adaptive grazing boosts water infiltration in Canadian grasslands, enhancing ecosystem resilience.
Adaptive multi-paddock grazing helps water soak into Canadian grassland soils better. By studying 52 ranches, researchers found that this grazing method, which gives plants time to recover between grazing, improves water infiltration. Specifically, using higher rest-to-grazing ratios early in the growing season increases water infiltration. More plant litter on the ground also helps water soak in, while denser soils with more sand slow down infiltration. This study shows that rotational grazing with cattle can make soil in grazed grasslands work better with water.
