Wetlands in Mongolian Plateau shrinking rapidly, impacting global climate.
The wetlands in southern Mongolian Plateau decreased by 16.4% from 2000 to 2018, mainly due to a reduction in lacustrine wetlands. The area shrank more in the northwest region, with a significant decrease in patch numbers. The western part saw a more notable decline compared to the eastern part. This change was driven by factors like the Mongolian monsoon climate, reduced precipitation, and human activities. Additionally, the temperature in the area increased by about 1.7℃ from 1975 to 2018, while precipitation slightly decreased.
