Environmental regulations in Canada have changed from voluntary to mandatory, aiming to improve environmental performance of Canadian firms. However, these changes have not yet led to better environmental performance. The study found that the new regulations and threats of regulation actually had a negative impact on environmental performance at the industry level. There was no evidence that the regulations stimulated industries to innovate. Overall, the stringency of environmental regulations in Canada did influence both environmental innovation and performance.
