Urban technology has both positive and negative impacts on rural areas. It helps rural development by sharing knowledge, but it also makes urban companies more competitive. This can lead to job losses in non-metropolitan areas. Data from US counties shows that between 2005 and 2015, metropolitan technological progress caused around 2.5 million non-metropolitan jobs to disappear.
