Government transparency laws are facing criticism for not effectively holding officials accountable. In response, targeted disclosure requirements for private companies have become popular for promoting socially beneficial behavior. By applying insights from private sector regulation to government transparency laws, opportunities for improving accountability have been identified. These "targeted transparency as regulation" laws aim to regulate government actions by incentivizing ethical conduct. While not a cure-all, this approach has the potential to enhance government accountability and address concerns about broad transparency laws.
