Coastal urban development threatens diversity of intertidal gastropods in Sabah.
Gastropods in the intertidal shore near Kota Kinabalu, Sabah are being affected by urban development. A study found that the number and abundance of gastropod species in this area are lower compared to non-urban locations. The most common species found were Planaxis sulcatus, Nodilittorina pyramidalis, and Cellana radiata. These gastropods were more abundant in the lower intertidal shore with steep slopes and rocky substrates. Human activities and habitat modifications are threatening the diversity and abundance of gastropods in this area. Future development should focus on minimizing habitat destruction and promoting the growth of gastropod populations for conservation purposes.
