By analyzing data on Russian companies' imports and exports from 2011 to 2015, the study found that after joining the WTO, Russian firms started trading with more countries and exporting more products. However, the impact on the amount of trade each firm did varied. The study also suggests that Russia's food embargo after the Crimean crisis might have been a way to protect its agriculture industry from the effects of joining the WTO.
