Financial System in Liberia Faces Crisis Due to Lack of Local Currency
Recent discussions in Liberia about the financial system and lack of local currency banknotes have raised concerns. Money creation and management are crucial to understand in this context. The fractional reserve system creates money out of thin air, leading to challenges when many people want to withdraw their deposits. The high use of US dollars in Liberia makes it hard to control monetary policy. Calculating the total amount of US dollars in circulation is difficult. De-dollarization efforts are needed to increase the use of the Liberian dollar. The Remittance Split Policy, aimed at this, led to more Liberian dollars in circulation.
