New method effectively removes harmful pollutants from landfill leachate.
The researchers aimed to clean up leachate from a dumpsite by using a method called absorption. They used solid waste as a filter to remove harmful substances like metals and solids from the leachate. The results showed that the method was effective in removing zinc and chromium by 75% and solids by 60%. However, it didn't work well for reducing the color of the leachate. The treatment also couldn't fully lower the organic matter content, leading to high COD levels. To improve the process, they suggest increasing the treatment time, adding more oxygen, and running the pump continuously.
