Australian state governments lack transparency in COVID-19 emergency spending accountability.
State governments in Australia have spent a lot of money in response to COVID-19. This study looked at how transparent three state governments were about their spending. They found that the information provided by the government was not very useful. The government did not share details about their budget plans or who they talked to when making decisions. This lack of transparency made it hard for MPs to discuss if the spending was fair and necessary. The study suggests that governments need to be more open about emergency spending to improve accountability.
