Extreme Precipitation Patterns in China Linked to Typhoons and Flooding
The study looked at how rainfall is spread out across China and how it changes over time. By using statistics and clustering methods, the researchers found that southern China gets more rain, but it varies a lot throughout the year. In the north and northwest, there is less rain and it doesn't change much. Most of the rain in China is light, with an average of 1.8 mm per event. Rainfall decreases as you go higher in elevation. Typhoons are a big reason for heavy rain in China, especially in the north. By dividing the rainfall into 8 categories, the researchers could see how it changes across the country. The most extreme rainfall can be predicted using a Gamma distribution. This study helps us understand how rainfall is distributed in China.
