Proactive chat reference services in libraries lead to more reference transactions. Researchers compared usage with and without proactivity in databases and found that enabling proactivity caused a quick increase in transactions, while disabling it led to a sharp decline. This suggests that proactivity itself drives the changes in usage. The study recommends using human-computer interaction and user experience approaches to better understand chat reference services.
