Accurate Flood Prediction Models Empower Communities to Mitigate Disaster Risks
The scientists compared how well two models, SWMM and SCS-CN, estimated runoff from rainfall. They looked at different rainfall amounts and found that SWMM was good at predicting small runoff volumes, similar to what was collected in a farm pond. However, for heavy rainfall, the Soil Conservation Service model worked better. Peak runoff happened with 35.5mm of rain. The study also measured how wet the ground was before it rained, which affected how much water ran off. SWMM could predict runoff for 2mm of rain. Overall, both models were useful for calculating runoff amounts from a watershed when it rained.
