QBO Modulation Impacts Weather Predictions, Challenging Extratropical Teleconnections.
The study looked at how the QBO affects the connection between the MJO and weather patterns over the Atlantic. They found that under certain conditions, the NAO in the North Atlantic can be influenced by the MJO phases, but different prediction models show varying degrees of accuracy. Most models can predict a stronger NAO after MJO phase 3 during westerly QBO, but struggle to show the same effect after MJO phase 7. Some models can predict a negative NAO after MJO phase 7 during easterly QBO. Overall, predicting how the QBO impacts MJO-related weather patterns remains a challenge for current models.
