Groundwater study reveals ancient flow patterns impacting radioactive waste disposal.
The researchers studied groundwater flow in the Horonobe area to understand how radioactive waste might move through the water. They used a method called three-dimensional PCA to analyze groundwater chemistry and isotopes. They found two main areas of groundwater mixing: deep underground and closer to the surface. The deep groundwater is very old, possibly hundreds of thousands to a million years old. It seems to come up to the surface through the Omagari Fault.
