High mutation rates don't always lead to faster adaptation in microbes.
Microbes adapting to new environments is a big question in science. Scientists studied E. coli bacteria with high mutation rates to see if they adapt faster. After 900 days, they found that even though the high mutation bacteria evolved faster, their fitness didn't improve much quicker than normal bacteria. This shows that having more mutations doesn't always mean adapting faster. The mutations in the high mutation bacteria were mostly due to other factors, not just the high mutation rate.
