Software traceability revolutionizes maintenance and evolution practices, boosting efficiency and quality.
Software traceability is important for maintaining and updating software. A study looked at 63 research papers from 2000 to 2020 to see how traceability impacts these processes. They found that traceability helps with 11 activities, with change management being the most common. More evidence from real-world use is needed to confirm its benefits. The main advantage of traceability is making change management easier, but establishing and maintaining traceability links can be costly. There are 13 methods and 32 tools available to support traceability. Challenges include improving link quality and tool performance. This study gives a good overview of how traceability can be used in software maintenance and evolution.
