New Treatment Stops Harmful Phosphorus Release in Agricultural Waterways
The researchers tested a method using Mg/Al-based layered double hydroxides to stop phosphorus release from sediment in agricultural drainage ditches. They found that this treatment significantly reduced soluble reactive phosphorus in the water and labile phosphorus in the sediment. The Mg/Al-LDHs transformed mobile phosphorus into more stable forms, preventing its release into the water. This approach effectively decreased phosphorus levels in the overlying water and inhibited the sediment from releasing phosphorus into the water.
