Smallholder farmers in Ethiopia profit from expanding upland rice production
Rice farming in Ethiopia is growing fast because it's productive and helps with food security. A study looked at the costs and profits of small farmers growing rice in the rain-fed uplands. They found that labor costs, especially weeding, were the biggest expenses. The farmers made a profit of ETB 12,084.46 per hectare, with a benefit-cost ratio of 1.44. To make rice farming even better, they suggest using modern technologies to increase productivity and save labor, and improving market information for farmers to work together.
