New research reveals key to improving feeding value of rice straw!
Researchers studied the quality of rice straw from different varieties and locations to understand what factors affect its nutritional value. They found that straw from the main cultivation season was better quality due to more rainfall. The stem of the straw was easier to digest and had less ash and silica compared to the leaf. Different rice straw varieties had similar nutritional value. Goats preferred eating leaves over stems, even though leaves were less digestible. Supplements made from palm oil mill effluent and palm kernel cake were equally good for enhancing rice straw nutrition. Chemical treatments improved the quality of rice straw, with sodium hydroxide being the most effective.
