Revolutionizing maize production in Nigeria with innovative irrigation and weed management.
The researchers conducted a field experiment in Nigeria to see how different soil amendments, irrigation intervals, and weeding methods affect maize productivity. They found that using biochar, compost, and NPK fertilizer with irrigation every three days resulted in the highest grain yields. This combination also improved soil properties. Herbicide applications with the same soil amendments also increased grain yields. Overall, combining specific soil amendments with regular irrigation can help farmers in the semi-arid Savanna region of Nigeria grow more maize.
