The researchers wanted to see how different semen extenders and cold storage affect the survival of alpaca sperm after freezing. They found that using BotuCRIO extender right after castration is best for preserving sperm viability. OptiXcell extender and delaying freezing decreased sperm motility. Cold storage for 24 hours before freezing also negatively impacted sperm motility and membrane integrity. In conclusion, BotuCRIO extender is better than OptiXcell for preserving alpaca sperm, and freezing sperm right after castration is recommended for the best results.
