New study finds alternative diets improve growth and survival of prawn larvae.
The researchers tested different diets to feed giant freshwater prawn larvae instead of Artemia nauplii. They found that gradually replacing up to 50% of Artemia nauplii with wet or dry diets resulted in good growth and survival of the larvae. However, abruptly replacing 50% of Artemia nauplii with artificial diets had a negative impact on larval development. Weaning from Artemia nauplii to artificial diets could start at stage V and increase gradually up to 50% by the postlarva stage. Providing artificial diets in different particle sizes based on the larval stage, increasing from 250 to 1000 μm, was important for successful larval rearing.
