Machine learning discovers 540 new local minima in lens design.
The researchers used a special method to find the best designs for a camera lens called the Cooke triplet. They found 19 out of 21 known best designs and discovered 540 new ones that are just as good or even better. They also found many designs that wouldn't work well.
