Irrigation Scheme Struggles to Sustain Farmland, Wasting Precious Water
The Koga Irrigation Scheme in Ethiopia was evaluated to improve its operation. The study looked at water efficiency, irrigation frequency, and sustainability of the irrigated area. Results showed water application efficiency ranged from 52.2% to 61.8%. Irrigation was more frequent than planned, and the scheme currently irrigates 6,200 ha out of the planned 7,004 ha. This means the scheme is 86% sustainable. On-farm water loss was identified as an issue, but empowering water user associations could improve efficiency.
