Urban growth in Mangaluru, India was studied using remote sensing technology to understand its impact on sustainable development. The researchers found that urban land in the city increased by over 400% from 1972 to 2018. The expansion was mainly through leapfrogging and edge expansion initially, but later shifted to infilling and edge expansion. The southern and south-eastern parts of the city were projected to experience rapid urban expansion. Overall, the study revealed that the urban growth in Mangaluru is highly unsustainable, highlighting the need for participatory urban planning to achieve sustainable development.
