New mung bean varieties boost crop yields in drought-prone Rajasthan.
Researchers evaluated different types of mung beans and farming methods in western Rajasthan. They tested 8 varieties and 90 farming techniques in 6 districts. The mung bean seed yield varied from 292 to 515 kg/ha without irrigation and 591 to 885 kg/ha with irrigation. The best variety produced 737 kg/ha. With farming techniques, the seed yield ranged from 250 to 630 kg/ha without irrigation and 435 to 1635 kg/ha with irrigation. Overall, the farming demonstrations increased mung bean productivity by 38.4% compared to the average in Rajasthan.
