Climate change accelerates streamflow changes in Norway, impacting water resources.
The study looked at how changes in temperature and precipitation affect streamflow in Western and Eastern Norway. They analyzed 30 years of data from 61 catchments in Western Norway and 51 catchments in Eastern Norway. They found that earlier snowmelt is causing spring flow to start earlier in both regions. In Eastern Norway, summer streamflow has increased in higher elevation catchments, and winter streamflow has slightly increased in half of the catchments. Rainfall has become more important in both regions. Changes in streamflow were linked to changes in rainfall and snowmelt, with temperature trends also playing a role.
