Children with hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia can discontinue diazoxide after 7 years, avoiding lifelong treatment.
Diazoxide is commonly used to treat children with low blood sugar due to high insulin levels. A study looked at 17 children who needed diazoxide for over 2 years. They found that stopping diazoxide after about 7 years of treatment led to normal blood sugar levels without needing the medication anymore. Most of these children also had some developmental delays. The study suggests that children with this condition who don't have specific genetic mutations can eventually stop taking diazoxide after a few years of treatment. Regular check-ups are important to monitor their progress.
